The Secret Language of Comics

It’s too late for this.

The comic is about a student who is minding their business and realizes that their laptop and analog clock don’t match up. I didn’t know the time changed until this morning, and I was so disoriented because of it. I was trying to figure out if we lost an hour or gain one for like 5 minutes. My brain was not functioning today.

In the brainstorming process, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to draw, so I kept on starting something then erasing it. I kept on doing that for like 5 times, so I changed drawing platforms. Finally, I figured out a concept that I liked. I really wanted to portray a student who was so tired that they overlooked the time change and thought something was wrong with them. I thought the story would be funny ,and others will be able to connect to it as well. I liked doing the triptych comic better than this one. I think the extra frame made it harder for me to come up for a longer plot. The layout of the panels didn’t hinder me much.

Sketch 4: Quadriptych

I was excepting my triptych and my quadriptych to be very similar going into this, however that turned out not to be the case. I wanted to continue Cat, Rat, and Bat but I couldn’t think of a way to fit them into a four panel comic. I was lost for ideas listening to Spotify when Touch-Tone Telephone but Lemon Demon came on and I got the urge to illustrate some of the lyrics. I still wanted to tell a story with the song so I tried to portray the narrative the writer was trying to tell with it. I also wanted to do more angles, since I had more space to tell a full and complete narrative. It’s not a comedic cartoon al well, which while different then writing for comedy, was still fun to write.

The Danger of Procrastination

For my Quadriptych I chose to make a story about procrastination. This is story was an example of some of the days I have been having this week. I chose procrastination because it is something that I have been doing a lot recently and I think many people can relate to it. This type of comic strip is a little longer than a triptych and because of that you have a little more space to develop the story.

Sketch 7 – Quadriptych

When thinking of an idea for my quadriptych, I initially had trouble. I was trying to make a story from scratch, and I could not think of anything. Then I started to think about my past memories, and I thought of this idea. As an older brother to multiple siblings, I have seen my parents grow more soft over the years. In other words, they always avoid trouble and get what they want from my parents. Hence, the concept of the comic. In the comic, a boy asks his mom if he could have a gum ball. The mom says no, but the little boy starts crying. After the boy cries, the mom feels bad and buys the gum ball.

Overall, I thought the quadriptych was easier to make than the triptych because the extra panel allowed for more creativity and the opportunity to develop more of a plot. If I would make this comic a triptych, I would not have included the close up of the boys face with the tear. Without the inclusion of this panel, the meaning of the comic would be quite different.

Sketch 7: Quadriptych

This comic was inspired by the rest days the university had decided to put in place to ease the marathon of a spring semester. I chose to draw a stick figure instead of using a picture like my Triptych to switch it up and give it a more “personal” and “amateur” feel. I used a text box to match the screenshots I took from official emory communications about rest days. I think this type of comic strip was easier for me to make because I am more used to the 4 panel comic structure I see a lot on instagram, facebook, and reddit. I think the added panel allowed me to have more space to develop a story which was much harder in the three panel. I used the middle part to develop the bandaid type solution that the college had provided. I chose to tell this story because it was all I had been thinking about all week.

Sunday Sketch 7: Quadriptych

This quadriptych shows a person lying in bed late at night and on their phone. At 1:59 a.m. on Sunday, March 14th, 2021 (start of Daylight Savings Time), they vow to go to sleep after one more video. When they look at the time again, it is now suddenly 3:00 a.m. The person is shocked and thinks they spent all that time on their phone.

My design process for this quadriptych was similar to that of when I created my triptych. I brainstormed short stories that could be portrayed from start to end in a limited number of panels. One new observation I made was that a lot of popular memes have this same goal; they try to make a joke in one or a couple of images with little to no text. I was very inspired by all of the memes I saw today in reaction to the start of Daylight Savings Time. Every year, I see many people react in the same way, making this situation relatable and easy to understand. I don’t think it was harder than a triptych because of the extended middle panels. I specifically showed a time change because that could be easily shown with the change of the clock face across two panels. It would have been harder if there was no action or the story being told was not “dynamic” in any way.

Quadriptych

The composition of my four-panel comic is very similar to that of the triptych. I started brainstorming an idea that I want to express, and I narrowed that idea down for it to be expressed in a story that is short enough for a quadriptych to convey. The challenging aspect about this assignment is the story plot creating part. Once I established the main idea of the story, I can start being creative and tell the story in a funny way, which is not that hard. The middle act is longer than that of a triptych, which allowed more room for me to tell the story, and, in my opinion, made the story easier to understand.

My story is about an individual who lost his phone, and then decided that he lost everything he knew about this world, which prompted him to move far away. His friend, who was standing on the dock, is confused because in his opinion, a phone is not that important. This story is exaggerating the reliance that some people have on their phones in this modern era. I have personally met some individuals who feels empty, or lost without their phone in their pockets. I think as great as technology is, people need to not rely their everyday lives on technology, but instead focus more on the world around them.

Tracing Stitches and Spinning Reflection

The thesis of my inductive essay is as a result of Walden being directly influenced by Stitches causes them to have similarities in choices made by the authors in pages.

During the process of tracing Stitches and Spinning. During the stage of looking for pages i found compelling in the books, I had to carefully examine and look for pages that I thought were compelling to me. At first, I thought about using the pages where the climaxes of the comics occur. In Stitches that was when David’s therapist told him that his mother didn’t love him and in Spinning I think it was when Tillie decided to end her skating career by telling her mother. During the tracing, some thoughts that occured in my head were mostly related under fascination that there is actually so much meaning in every page that there are a lot of choices the authors had to go through to create every page.

This new way to structure an essay took some getting used to but I still approached it in a way where I first write notes on another document and then put in a order in which I want to present it.

I feel like after this assignment it has definitely helped me understand the series of choices the authors made that I wouldn’t have noticed without the knowledge I gained in this class. I do think that the added degree of being able to identify the less obvious stylistic elements in the two books has helped me understand them better. The single biggest insight I’ve gained during this assignment was to be able to look at comics in the frame of a “page” instead individual panels. I found out that there is, more often than not, meaning behind everything.

Tracing Stitches and Spinning: Reflection

This assignment was definitely more challenging than the title makes it sound—sure the act of tracing the pages was easy but that was literally it. When I was thinking of what two pages to trace, I went through my bookmarked pages—there was pages I thought seemed important while I read along so I would bookmark them. The page I selected from Stitches was one I had bookmarked, however when I was going through my bookmarked pages in Spinning, I could not find one that seemed at first sight “easily comparable” to my chosen Stitches page, so I flipped through pages within the areas of bookmarked ones until I kind of decided to just do a “random” one. I traced and annotated my Stitches page first, feeling decently confident about the details I was noticing as I worked, then while my chosen Spinning page did not seem comparable at first sight, once I started tracing and adding annotations, I was noticing a few compositional things of comics’ secret language that were implemented in both pages but presented in different ways. This point of view was completely different than when I was reading the comics for the first time; the first reading, I was more focused on the storyline and while I obviously acknowledged the visuals, it wasn’t in this critical and analytical point of view.

I always have trouble writing “traditional” essays with the thesis sentence at the beginning because I usually don’t know what I’m even going to write about. And, while this format was supposed to be more helpful in the sense that you can just get started and not worry about the thesis statement until the end since it will be a synthesis of your main claims, I still did not really know what to write about/how to structure what I wanted to talk about. Additionally, thinking of how to word my thesis statement even at the end was still stressful. I think this process felt similarly stressful to writing other essays because even when I write in the “traditional” structure, I kind of make some weak thesis statement or skip it and just start writing, then return to it later… In the end, I made my thesis statement: David Small and Tillie Walden’s choices of flow, moment, and image work cooperatively to provide the reader with enough information to decode the narrative. While it may seem like the reader has not much other than the visual representations to rely on for decoding the meaning in these individual pages with minimal text, both Small and Walden set up these pages in a way that provides just enough information for the reader’s comprehension.

Tracing Reflection

Analysing text has always been a bit of a challenge for me. I know I have issues with taking things from text too literally, or looking over small details in the process of picturing the scene in my mind. Thankfully with comics, I feel like I am a bit better at analysis. Being able to see all the components of the scene at once instead of having to skim the text over and over again is easier for me and I pick up on details more. Tracing also helped me to pick up details that I hadn’t noticed before like the lamp in Stitches.

Writing a thesis at the end was tricky for me. I’ve always been taught to start out with the thesis and usually during the essay I will keep on referring back to it to make sure I don’t get too off topic. Of course I had the thesis in mind when I wrote the essay but I didn’t actually have it written out. I was afraid my essay sounded too ramble-ly in my essay but I think with enough editing I avoided it ok.

I feel like this assignment did help me to unlock the “secret language”. I am a fast reader, much to the detriment of my reading comprehension. Taking the time to trace these pages and really get to know them helped me realize that no detail is put on the page without reason. Until I did this analysis I didn’t get quite how they were different. I knew they were different of course, but until I did I couldn’t say what exact elements made them stand out from each other (Like the shading in each book).
